book review – MORE THAN THIS

Not to play favorites, but Patrick Ness is one of my favorite YA writers. His Chaos Walking series (The Knife of Never Letting Go, The Ask and the Answer, and Monsters of Men) is nothing short of brilliant, and one of my all-time favorite YA series. I just now got around to reading Ness’s most recent book, More Than This (released last year), and was completely blown away. The book starts with the drowning death of protagonist Seth, and quickly moves to his “resurrection.” Waking in a deserted world covered in dust and devoid of all signs of life, Seth is convinced he’s in Hell, but that’s not quite the case. Seth embarks on journey to unravel the mystery of where he is, and in doing so uncovers shocking truths about his life before dying. Beautifully written, Ness crafts a story with the assumption that his audience is sophisticated and mature—something often lacking from other YA books. More Than This is an amazing start to what I hope will be another compelling and exquisitely crafted series by Ness.
