SJF – Chapter 15

This entry is part 15 of 25 in the series SJF Chapters

background-tile3.jpgDarius and Dr. Sam didn’t say much to each other as the elevator moved vertically, then horizontally, and then, it seemed, diagonally. The doors opened on to the eleventh floor of the Tower. Dr. Sam led the way down a long hallway that looked like a hallway in any other apartment building. Except this wasn’t any other apartment building. Continue reading

SJF – Chapter 14

This entry is part 14 of 25 in the series SJF Chapters

background-tile3.jpgIt took Darius and the others two hours to complete their tests. Once they were done, Xangtha gave the group a brief lesson in how the elevators worked—which was surprisingly complicated and confusing—and then she escorted the small group to the employee cafeteria. Continue reading

SJF – Chapter 13

This entry is part 13 of 25 in the series SJF Chapters

background-tile3.jpgShortly after Darius got his identification badge, he was taken to a small classroom with two-dozen desks. The top of each desk was actually a computer screen that tilted upward. Sitting at eight of the desks were five men and three women—all waiting for the new employee orientation. Darius wondered if any of them were in Second Chance. Continue reading

SJF – Chapter 12

This entry is part 12 of 25 in the series SJF Chapters

background-tile3.jpgDarius sat in the main reception area of Personnel. He had eaten breakfast with Dr. Sam, and considered himself lucky that his face and hands weren’t swollen. Butchie had given him some ice packs to keep the swelling down, and taken his clothes to make sure Karlito’s blood was washed off. Continue reading

SJF – Chapter 11

This entry is part 11 of 25 in the series SJF Chapters

background-tile3.jpgUntil his arrest, Darius lived at Sloane House, a run-down building on the west side of the city. Originally built as a hotel in the 1920s, it had since fallen on hard times, eventually coming to be used for “transitional housing.” For Darius that meant living in a fifteen-story building with only one working elevator, populated by a variety of odd characters ranging from psychiatric outpatients to ex-cons on parole to people who weren’t exactly homeless but still had no place to really call home. Continue reading

SJF – Chapter 10

This entry is part 10 of 25 in the series SJF Chapters

background-tile3.jpgAfter lunch, Dr. Sam and Darius took the elevator back to MTSU for Darius’s dental appointment. “When you finish up with your dental exam, someone other than me will come get you—I’m not sure yet who it will be,” said Dr. Sam. “Whoever it is, they will take you to get your stuff. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Continue reading

SJF – Chapter 9

This entry is part 9 of 25 in the series SJF Chapters

background-tile3.jpgDarius sat with Butchie and Big Mike for over thirty minutes, while the two security guards gave him a crash course in how things worked at Super Justice Force HQ. Big Mike did most of the talking. Once in a while Butchie would look up from the file he was studying to say something. “The stuff we’re tellin’ ya ain’t gonna be in the Employee Handbook or covered in orientation,” Butchie would interject. Continue reading

SJF – Chapter 8

This entry is part 8 of 25 in the series SJF Chapters

background-tile3.jpgChuck Maslon liked to think he ran the whole show at Super Justice Force World Headquarters. As the head of security, he was in fact one of the six most powerful SJF employees. Only the “supes”—superheroes like Captain Freedom, Nightwatcher and Kid Spectacular—had any real authority over him. But there were a handful of others that could call the shots just like Maslon, and every once in a while something reminded him that the show he fancied was his to run wasn’t really his, and that he was nothing more than a player. A big player, with a lot of power, but a player nonetheless. Continue reading

SJF – Chapter 7

This entry is part 7 of 25 in the series SJF Chapters

background-tile3.jpgDarius felt exhausted. He’d been awake for over twenty-four hours, and even though he usually had trouble sleeping, he felt like he would fall asleep in the backseat of the car being driven by Chuck Maslon. Dr. Sam sat in the front passenger seat. Continue reading

SJF – Chapter 6

This entry is part 6 of 25 in the series SJF Chapters

background-tile3.jpgTechnically, Darius Logan had been placed under arrest, although the paperwork he filled out referred to it as a “term of service.” Instead of being tried and convicted, he was remanded to the custody of Super Justice Force to participate in Second Chance, a rehabilitation program operated by SJF. Continue reading
